A Texas-Sized Educational Leap

By Giovanni Salinas and Sergio Loera The Texas Academy of International & STEM studies is perhaps the newest high school in Laredo, it is located inside Cowart Hall at Texas A&M International University, TAMIU, and is part of TAMIU Independent School District, TISD. It was first formed through a legislation authored by Senator Judith Zaffirini around 10 years ago, but planning came to a halt due to a lack of funding. However, in 2014, the first cohort was inducted into the Academy featuring a total of 42 students. The Academy showed great results as the first graduate class in 2016 attempted 582 student credit hours and completed 567 for a mind-blowing passing percentage of 97.4. Ms. Cassandra Ramirez was part of the first graduating class. ...

By Anna Castilla To most people, he is known as Dr. Luis Fuentes; but to our family he is either known as Louie or as “The Doctor”. Luis Fuentes is 27 years old and resides in Corpus Christi, Texas where he works at a local hospital. He is currently doing his residency and is looking to graduate within the next two years. For most of us, the spirit of giving manifested itself in the form of loose change dropped in Salvation Army buckets on our way out of the mall, or through old clothes dropped off at local clothing drives. Maybe some of us felt extra generous and lent a hand to someone in need. Still, in the hustle and bustle of this modern age, it’s easy to forget the importance of giving rather than receiving. Yet in the blur of life, there are individuals who devote themselves to giving selflessly to those around them. Alicia Coronado is one of those people. The Biggest Issue Nobody is Talking About

As a TAMIU student under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, I was still just like any other student, up until a certain point. I have always been enrolled full time, and have been able to balance two part-time jobs since high school. Like many other students, I was fortunate enough to have been accepted into the DACA program right after high school. Ever since then, with the ability to work, and the opportunity to continue studying, it seemed like I had made it. I never had any problems regarding my renewal for the DACA program, and with only a semester to go before graduating, everything seemed to go according to plan. TAMIU’s Advising & Mentoring Center (AMC) is a precious gem among the university’s vast resources. It’s an office that has imprinted memories to just about every TAMIU student, including myself. The hard-working student mentors work rigorously, helping freshman and sophomore students acclimate to TAMIU systems, student routines, and campus resources. Though freshman students may enter school with confidence, it is the mentors and their office that opens the door for them. (more…)
