Texas A&M International University Career Services held its All Majors Career Fair on Oct. 14, inviting more than 30 organizations to the event from local, state and federal agencies.

Like any event, the show cannot run without its efforts behind the scenes. With this, Assistant Director of Career Services Michelle Rodriguez offered a look behind creating and holding this career fair.

“Honestly, it’s something we look forward to every semester because we know that we’re going to be able to connect students to different industries and organizations,” Rodriguez said. “There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes and in preparation for the event. We start reaching out months in advance, just to ensure all organizations and employers have time, because a lot of them are coming from outside.”

Despite the critical nature of contacting employers almost six months in advance, the career fair aims to open opportunities to TAMIU students, not just upcoming graduates, and acknowledge that a major is not strictly limited to one employer, or business.

“Events like these are crucial for students, and it’s not just for students who are about to graduate,” Rodriguez said. “We’re talking freshmen [as well] because they start getting genuine networking skills, which is so crucial. I think it’s a great opportunity for students to come, practice our networking events and start opening their eyes to see what else is out there.”

In light of hosting this career fair to open student opportunities, junior Martin Moncivais volunteered for the fair and recognized what it means to be a part of an event like this.

“I understand more behind the scenes for career services here in TAMIU,” Moncivais said. “So, it’s really impressive where we’re doing all this just for [our] community. It’s the people, the journey and the future actions of people, having a good career in the future.”

But this event is not only in the eyes of those interested, but those there to talk.

Laredo Independent School District Director of Human Resources Edna Garza shared her perspective as being one of the booths in the career fair, as she showcased LISD.

“We always enjoy talking to the students, especially here at TAMIU,” Garza said. “We always do our best to participate at the TAMIU fair every year … it’s an excellent recruiting opportunity for this district to come to this event at TAMIU.”

As an LISD employee, Garza said there is a common misconception that LISD is strictly an opportunity for teachers. She describes LISD as a business with opportunities for everyone who falls under it.

“A lot of times, the perception is that we’re only looking for teachers, [but] they forget that a school district is a business,” Garza said. “So, we let them know, ‘Hey, we also have a business office, we have safety, we have transportation,’ … so it opens their eyes [about] the

school district [and] that it’s not just teachers we’re looking for. It’s a business, so we’re looking for people in all aspects of what it takes to run a business.”

Besides what LISD has to offer to the community and interested or future employees, Garza recognizes the actions of individuals attending this event and what it means for them.

“I know some students, right now, [who] come years before they’re graduating. So, that’s good that they’re preparing themselves as to what they’re looking for, or maybe, what employer interests them,” Garza said. “They also get to see what are the requirements of the jobs that they would like to pursue in the future [and] they’re getting an opportunity to grasp what’s out there.”

Every semester, TAMIU Career Services hosts and supports career fairs. Career Services’ upcoming event is Graduate and Professional School Fair, taking place on Oct. 30 for those interested in pursuing and connecting with schools for master’s, doctorate and professional programs.

“Come by Career Services before the event to prepare, so you have your resume ready, your LinkedIn profile, and we can help you with your elevator pitch, so you know exactly what to say when you approach a table,” Rodriguez said. “You want to look polished and prepared … appointments are preferred to make sure that we are able to service all of our students, but if we’re available, we’re [open] to walk-ins.”

Interested students with further questions about related events or who are in need of information on career-ready materials, may reach out to TAMIU’s Career Services prior to events or at any time.
