The TAMIU volleyball team faced Lone Star Conference rival University of Texas Permian Basin for its Youth Day game. The final score was 3-1 in favor of the Falcons on Oct. 5.

Even though Texas A&M International University started off hot in their first set winning 25-20, the Falcons ended up winning the second set and gained momentum after that.

“The game plan was to execute and even though it wasn’t our outcome, I believe we still played our best,” outside hitter Mia Molina said. “We just need to prepare by scouting the [opposing] team and just playing our own game.”

Getting ready for upcoming games, Molina said she focuses through “learning how to score and using my toolbox.”

While the team held strong offensively with Molina achieving 19 kills herself, it was insufficient for a win. The Dustdevils were unable to break through the tough defense of the opposing team. Blocks and a good ground game from the Falcons prevented many opportunities the Dustdevils were unable to capitalize upon.

The first set was decisively taken by the Dustdevils, but they were unable to build upon that win. The second set was taken by the Falcons with a large margin of 25-17.  The third set was a must-win for the Dustdevils, but they were unable to convert, and it fell to the Falcons. With the third set lost, the Dustdevils morale seemed to break and they eventually lost the fourth set to end the game.

“[The plan] is to win as many games as possible and make the conference tournament,” Molina said.

The LSC Tournament takes the top-eight teams of the conference for a knockout-style tournament. TAMIU currently sits in sixth place with only one in-conference loss.
