Among the many Barbie-themed events, a Bystander Barbie Greet Dot training took place with the Title IX Office during Spirit and Consent weeks.

The early February event focused on bystander intervention training. Tutoring Services Coordinator Jennipher Ambrose is a member of the Green Dot initiative.

“This event is to spread awareness of our Green Dot initiative, which is to lower the rates of sexual assault, dating violence and stalking on our campus,” Ambrose said.

The Texas A&M International University event itself is annual, usually held the first week of February. Its student attendance increased, as well as asking about training and how they can help, Compliance Coordinator Aleen Gutierrez said.

“We’ve seen the students more involved as we go on every year,” Gutierrez said.

This year, it ran concurrently with CAB’s Spirit Week. There was a noticeable increase in willingness to speak out and attend. If, for whatever reason, students aren’t able to attend these events, there are still resources around campus to offer the same training.

“We do have several departments here at the University,” Gutierrez said. “If they need resources they can go ahead and reach out … We also help them from our department to guide them wherever they need to.”

The departments referred to include: Office of Compliance, Civil Rights Compliance Program and Title IX offices.

According to the TAMIU Office of Compliance website, “The mission of the TAMIU Compliance Office is to reinforce and support a culture of compliance which builds compliance consciousness into the daily activities and operations throughout each department.”

This mission statement includes staff and students in a culture that accepts speaking out about inappropriate behavior, as well as helping everyone understand the concept of consent and stepping in when necessary.

Interested persons can find the Office of Compliance at the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library Room 159 with the Title IX Office located at Killam Room 159B. Students can also call the Compliance Office at (956) 326-2856 to help find Green Dot resources, as well as to report any inappropriate behavior on campus. Lastly, the Title IX and Civil Rights Office can be contacted via instagram @txamiucivilrights.
