For most Americans, Thanksgiving is a day in which families come together, break bread, and enjoy each other’s company. Yet some are not fortunate to share this day with their loved ones for various reasons. For college students, time, distance, and money are often factors that can keep them from joining their families for the holiday. The Biggest Issue Nobody is Talking About

As a TAMIU student under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, I was still just like any other student, up until a certain point. I have always been enrolled full time, and have been able to balance two part-time jobs since high school. Like many other students, I was fortunate enough to have been accepted into the DACA program right after high school. Ever since then, with the ability to work, and the opportunity to continue studying, it seemed like I had made it. I never had any problems regarding my renewal for the DACA program, and with only a semester to go before graduating, everything seemed to go according to plan. In the blink of an eye, however, everything turned upside down. (more…)

As if only yesterday, I remember seeing Stephanie Martinez for the first time. Martinez and I both had college algebra together and the atmosphere of the class was brightened with her unique persona. TAMIU’s Advising & Mentoring Center (AMC) is a precious gem among the university’s vast resources. It’s an office that has imprinted memories to just about every TAMIU student, including myself. The hard-working student mentors work rigorously, helping freshman and sophomore students acclimate to TAMIU systems, student routines, and campus resources. Though freshman students may enter school with confidence, it is the mentors and their office that opens the door for them. (more…)

Pushing the Ph.D.

Dr. Ariadne Gonzalez received her Ph.D. over the summer while teaching courses for the Department of Psychology and Communication. Gonzalez first graduated from TAMIU with a Bachelor of Arts in communication. She then received her master's, also in communication, from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Now, just this summer, she earned her Ph.D. in organizational communication from Texas A&M-College Station. (more…)

Lucky Thirteen: A Story of Surviving And Thriving

At twenty-one years old, Kenneth “Kenny” Duncan Jr. leads a rather ordinary life. A self-described cowboy, his wardrobe largely consists of boots and jeans. His playlist includes classics from George Strait and Kenny Chesney, which he blasts while driving on the streets of Laredo. When he’s not on campus working or studying, he can be found fishing at the lake or sharing poems at Gallery 201. This life, filled with simple pleasures and few worries, is something Duncan cherishes now more than ever. Because just over a year ago, his life was forever changed by three words: “You have cancer.” (more…)
