Texas A&M International University student-athletes step off the court and into the community. The women’s basketball team recently increased its volunteer efforts, focusing on hands-on activities and mentoring people in adaptive programs.

Participating in these activities marks a shift in the team’s community engagement, focusing on consistent interaction rather than one-time events. Players dedicate time to building relationships, creating an environment that encourages learning, teamwork and fun. This consistent presence creates a positive space that encourages learning, teamwork and fun for those involved.

Sophomore Gabby Gamboa said these experiences have been valuable for the athletes as well, offering them a perspective that they do not often find during high-stakes conference games. The program allows athletes to step away from their roles as competitors to serve as neighbors and friends.

“Spending time with them teaches us leadership and patience,” Gamboa said.

Interacting with people in the community gives athletes a chance to contribute while developing personal skills and learning how to be role models. The program also gives community members a chance to engage with college athletes in ways that promote mentorship and inclusion.

Activities range from mini basketball games to interactive skill-building games, allowing participants to develop confidence and social skills. These activities highlight the basketball program’s commitment to service.

“It’s amazing to see everyone come together for a cause bigger than ourselves,” Gamboa said.

These volunteer efforts demonstrate how sports programs can extend their influence far beyond the scoreboard. The program is expected to continue throughout the semester, with plans to expand volunteer opportunities in the coming months.

Through this initiative, the team showed that teamwork does not stop at the court; it can inspire and uplift the entire community. By prioritizing service and engagement, the student-athletes set a lasting example of how university programs can make a meaningful, positive impact.
