Student Safety with Gina Gonzalez

Throughout the semester, many students have become swamped with the academic aspect of their transition into college. However, there are just as many communal opportunities as there are academic, as stressed in orientation. The transition from high school to college can be a major one, and the staff within Student Success here at TAMIU are here to make the transition as smooth and easy as possible. Gina Villarreal Gonzalez, assistant to the Vice President of Student Success, emphasized the many payoffs and benefits students can reap from becoming involved on and off campus. (more…)

Campus Carry in Full Effect at TAMIU

By Carina Garcia This fall semester, remember to pack your books, pencils, and license to carry if you have one.  Texas Governor Greg Abbot, signed the HB 910, an act permitting open carry on campus for anyone 21 years and over and with a license permit in all State public universities, including Texas A&M International University (TAMIU). The law took effect on Monday, August 1, 2016 and students and faculty have different points of views regarding this issue. (more…)

TAMIU’s Advising & Mentoring Center (AMC) is a precious gem among the university’s vast resources.  It’s an office that has imprinted memories to just about every TAMIU student, including myself.  The hard-working student mentors work rigorously, helping freshman and sophomore students acclimate to TAMIU systems, student routines, and campus resources.  Though freshman students may enter school with confidence, it is the mentors and their office that opens the door for them. Campus Carry: What You Need To Know

TAMIU’s 2016 fall semester starts with enthusiasm and the new controversial Campus Carry Law.  Since it was accepted by the Texas A&M University System, some doubts have surfaced about whether the law will or will not be beneficial for institutions of higher education.  When considering these doubts, it is vital to understand the limits of the Campus Carry Law: it only “allows licensed holders to carry a concealed handgun on a campus of higher education.” (more…)

Planetarium Offers Summer Showings

The Lamar Bruni Vergara Planetarium is one of Texas A&M International University’s and the state of Texas’s most sophisticated digital projection systems. The planetarium’s impressive equipment employs 5.1 surround sound, 3-D computer graphics, and two 4 K projectors that transport audience viewers into the vast mysteries of space and time. Twenty-nine shows are currently being offered to TAMIU’s community and the public –four of which feature history’s greatest music of all time from the bands Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. (more…)

TAMIU Vigil For Those Lost In Orlando

Photos by I.M. Kero, who also contributed to this report.  June 12th, 2016 marked a tragic day in American history, as the country mourned its most fatal mass shooting to date. Forty-nine individuals lost their lives in a massacre at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. The perpetrator, Omar Mateen, later died in a standoff with police. Forty more victims were hospitalized, many of them in critical condition. In wake of this tragedy, the victims, their families, and the LGBTQ+ community have received an outpouring of support from across the globe. There was no shortage of support from students and faculty at Texas A&M International University. Officials Speak on Zika Virus at TAMIU

Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX) hosted a meeting at TAMIU to discuss the treat of the Zika virus in Texas, and how it affects Laredo as a border city. Officials of the meeting discussed the actions that were being taken by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Aside from the efforts of the federal government, they discussed the efforts taken by state, local, and international agencies. Their discussions explored how all of these levels of governments could cooperate for the health of their citizens. Raising awareness of sexual assault on college campuses has become a priority for many of TAMIU’s top-ranking officials and students alike.
