Beginning the night with a slight drizzle and earthy smell, Texas A&M International University held its annual Halloween Fest on Oct. 29. The event ran from 6 to 9 p.m. with a high student turnout.

Halloween Fest is one of the most popular TAMIU events, with students dressed up as various characters; some even going as far as to make their own costumes, which allow them to showcase their creativity. One student, Sarai Perez, created and wore a May Queen costume from Midsommer. Many TAMIU organizations used this event as a fundraiser; it was also open to the public.

The common theme among the booths was “Out of Space,” with many decorating schemes including aliens and stars. The American Chemical Society booth featured Christian Bowles in a giant Toy Story Alien inflatable costume. Various student organizations sold food and beverages, like donuts, aguas frescas, tacos, fruit cups and more. Other student organizations held activities and offered games like throwing something into a basket, or fishing for a rubber duck. The River Gull Journal offered poems for participants to either decipher or create their own in code.

“Events like this are important because they bring students and families together and it encourages school spirit and creates a sense of community outside the classroom,” said Carlos Sandoval, who was dressed as Michael Jackson for the event.

There was a pumpkin patch so the public could take pictures in. The costume group of the night, which garnered a lot of attention, was the Shrek gang: Miguel Guzman, Nicolas Diaz, Roger Delafuente and Max Rodriguez.

The night ended later with many students staying after to help clean up and a couple of days later, the pumpkins from the pumpkin patch were free to take.
