More than just a series of games, intramural sports is an opportunity for students to unwind and remain active. In addition, it offers them a chance to explore new sports, test their limits and it gives former varsity players a chance to stay in the game, free from the rigorous expectations of university athletes.
Through sports like basketball, volleyball, flag football, tennis, pickleball and more, Texas A&M International University’s intramurals program allows students from various backgrounds to team up for friendly competition.

TAMIU student Matthew Hernandez, right, participates in a basketball practice for TAMIU’s Intramural sports program on Sept. 19, 2025.
“I was on my high school’s varsity basketball team, but I wanted to enjoy college without the rigorous schedule demands of playing at the collegiate level,” TAMIU psychology major Juan Gonzalez said. “With intramurals, I am able to enjoy both aspects. I get to compete without the high demands and get to let loose with my friends.”
Intramurals may not draw professional scouts to watch or offer scholarships, but that does not diminish the fierce competition. Championship matchups are filled with energetic students rooting for their classmates and head-to-head battles enhance the enthusiasm.
In its essence, intramurals focus on more than just achieving victory. They allow students to unwind from the stress of tests and assignments.
“Playing soccer teaches me time management and discipline,” TAMIU biology major Amanda Garcia said. “It allows me to step away from my academics, yet simultaneously, encourages me to remain on track.”
The perks of intramural sports go beyond physical well-being and sportsmanship. For many students, it serves as a method to cope with solitude and maintain participation in university events. The perception of acceptance and inclusion aid in students feeling accepted.
TAMIU’s intramural sports program remains expanding, with a number of individuals joining every term. Whether they are new to the sport or are veteran athletes, students engage in the rush of the challenge and team spirit. Intramurals give students the opportunity to bond, progress and create unforgettable experiences.
For numerous students, these experiences are expected to be memories they cherish forever.
