Texas A&M International University’s Student Counseling Services, located in the Student Center, underwent a name change to the Kate Marmion Counseling Center. This renaming was possible through a $2 million donation by the Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation.
Vice President for Student Engagement Rosalinda Garcia began the ceremony by recognizing the foundation’s gift to TAMIU.

“… TAMIU was blessed last year when a wonderful set of sponsors genuinely made a $2 million gift in the name of their baby [Kate Marmion], for whom we are naming our center,” Garcia said.
TAMIU President Christoper Maynard shared a deep appreciation for this gift, and recognized the center’s services, which include counseling, crisis support, training, consultation and outreach events designed to promote mental health and support student well-being across TAMIU.
“On behalf of TAMIU, I want to extend our sincere appreciation to the Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation, for its extraordinary gift, establishing an endowment to support student mental health programs,” Maynard said.
The president reflected on the importance of mental health access in institutions and counseling’s impact on TAMIU students.
“Research consistently shows that counseling services are making a real difference in student success,” Maynard said. “Last academic year alone, the center provided more than 2,500 appointments serving students who turn to these services for guidance, support and encouragement and our students have affirmed that the center is doing an outstanding job.”
This donation is not only monetary, but a step further into TAMIU’s aim of offering a safe environment while supporting students in numerous aspects.
“This generous endowment will help strengthen and expand the surfaces provided through the Kate Marmion Counseling Center, ensuring that our students continue to have access to the support they need to thrive academically, personally and emotionally,” Maynard said.
SGA President Adalberto Gonzalez shared a student’s perspective regarding this donation to the mental health facility.
“You’re telling every student on this campus that your mind matters just as much as your GPA,” Gonzalez said. “You’re helping us build a culture where asking for help … is not seen as [a] weakness, but as a strength.”
Counseling services are available to all currently enrolled students for no cost as they are covered through the student health fees.
