City Council discusses taxes, school buses, groceries

The last city council meeting of last month was without a doubt very crucial for the city's development especially in the northern part of town and downtown area. The two main issues that were discussed in city hall was the implementation of the tax increment investment zone (TIRZ) and the future of a soon to be empty building, once notorious of being home of the biggest grocery retailer of the state, H-E-B. CDC To Open New Office in Laredo

Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX-28) alongside Mayor Pete Saenz and the City of Laredo recently announced the building of a new office for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Laredo. Three CDC-contracted public health professionals are also to be attached to the project.   Cuellar requested support for the building of this office. He also requested that Caduceus Healthcare hire contracted public health professionals to work alongside the City of Laredo Health Department. They will work alongside other health agencies along the South Texas border. The purpose of this office is to focus on combating the Zika virus. (more…)

The announcement came when she sent a text message to her campaign supporters. The Transgender Issue Is About Healthcare and Not Bathrooms

Even though the population of transgender individuals in America is an extremely small one, the media has caused a massive rise of attention towards the individuals. The current dilemma is one concern the use of their bathrooms in public space. Are transgender people allowed to use the bathroom that associates with the gender they identify as? President Obama thinks yes, but many conservatives think they should not. Like with all political debates, there are legitimate concerns on both sides. The Electronic Entertainment Expo or E3 was held in Los Angeles from June 13 to June 17. The annual event showcased some of the biggest video games and gaming technologies coming later this year and in the future. Though some new hardware was featured, this year was all about the games. The Greatest of All Time

On May 25, 1965, Sonny Liston enters a ring with his opponent seeking to regain his title. Liston has been getting himself in trouble since his first defeat by this opponent. He needed this rematch, not only to preserve his boxing career, but to redeem his honor. He’s been a broken man ever since. Liston comes at his opponent with a left jab, but it proves useless. His opponent swings over with a phantom punch, a strike not even the judges could see, and Liston goes down. He tries to get up, but he can’t. In less than two minutes, Liston is defeated again. What he failed to recognize was that he was not having a rematch with the same man. His first loss was by Cassius Clay. His second unapologetic loss was by Muhammad Ali. (more…)

Fleet Week New York

The United States Navy and Coast Guard held its annual Fleet Week celebration from May 25 to May 30. The celebration took place in different boroughs of New York City and involved several vessels and commands. Fleet Week is special event mainly hosted by the US Navy. However, alongside the Coast Guard, the Marine Corps and foreign navies are sometimes present. This year, the Canadian navy had one of their ships at port. Fleet Week is generally a public event where people could take tours inside the ships and meet some of the sailors. Aside from that, it is also a celebration for the sailors, who are given extended liberty to explore the city. (more…)

Afghanistan and Iraq are horror stories of their own, but Syria is the real tragedy. Syria was not really doing much during the Bush years, and part of the Obama years. They weren’t friendly, but they weren’t being bombed either. The spring of 2011 in known as the Arab Spring. It was the time when several Arab nations had revolts that overthrew their dictators and longtime leaders. Tunisia kicked it off where it was done somewhat peacefully. Egypt was the next big move. It was more bloody there, but the Egyptian president eventually resigned. Libya was very bloody. What started as protest became a civil war. Officials Speak on Zika Virus at TAMIU

Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX) hosted a meeting at TAMIU to discuss the treat of the Zika virus in Texas, and how it affects Laredo as a border city. Officials of the meeting discussed the actions that were being taken by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Aside from the efforts of the federal government, they discussed the efforts taken by state, local, and international agencies. Their discussions explored how all of these levels of governments could cooperate for the health of their citizens. Alongside the congressman were high-ranking officials from the CDC, as well as other government officials from the Department of Homeland Security, the State of Texas and the Texas Department of State Health Services, the City of Laredo Health Department, Webb County, and rep...
