K-pop, a varied genre that began in South Korea, has expanded well beyond simple pop music. In the last decade, it transformed from a niche interest into a powerful cultural movement, thanks to artists like BTS, Blackpink, Twice, Stray Kids and Ateez.

Even movies are getting involved, shown by the recent release of K-pop Demon Hunters. However, beneath the famous idols and major productions, there is a vibrant rock scene that often gets overlooked. One notable band is Xdinary Heroes, a six-member group that has built a loyal fan base since its debut in 2021.

Signed under Studio J, a sub-label of JYP Entertainment, Xdinary Heroes continues the legacy of one of K-pop’s top four agencies. JYP launched groups like g.o.d, 2PM, 2AM, Wonder Girls, Miss A, Got7, Itzy, Nmixx and the rock band Day6, often called Xdinary Heroes’ “big brother” group because they were the first rock band to debut under the label.

Xdinary Heroes officially debuted on Dec. 6, 2021, with the single “Happy Death Day.” The band members include drummer and leader Gunil, keyboardist and main vocalist Jungsu, rhythm guitarist, rapper and vocalist Gaon, synthesizer keyboardist, rapper and vocalist O.de, lead guitarist Jun Han and bassist, main vocalist and youngest member Jooyeon. In K-pop, Jooyeon is also known as the “visual,” a title given to the member who best matches Korean beauty standards.

Among the group’s expanding discography, one track stands out: their first all-English release, “iNSTEAD!” The song features Yoon Do Hyun from YB, a veteran band that started in 1994. This collaboration fully embraces metal, with explosive instrumentals and strong screamed vocals that blend perfectly with Xdinary Heroes’ singing and rap lines.

In February 2025, their partnership continued when they contributed to YB’s track “Rebellion,” solidifying their role in Korea’s modern rock revival. This momentum continued on March 24, 2025, when Xdinary Heroes released their sixth mini-album, “Beautiful Mind.”

The title track, “Beautiful Life,” changes tempos several times and draws inspiration from Bohemian Rhapsody. The song even includes the famous line from George Orwell: “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.” Originally intended to be a six- or seven-minute epic, the track was shortened to four minutes and 26 seconds after discussions with the label.

The rest of “Beautiful Mind” showcases the band’s diversity. “Fight Me” combines aggressive synthesizers with heavy guitar riffs in an alternative metal anthem about resilience. “More Than I Like” blends metalcore elements with the emotional depth of a ballad, exploring self-esteem and anxiety in relationships. “Diamond,” an all-English track, mixes fast-tempo rock energy with a heartfelt message about overcoming inner struggles.

Although there are no 2026 releases yet, excitement is building. In a recent radio appearance with the band Dragon Pony, Gaon and Jungsu hinted at their upcoming comeback. Jungsu dropped the mysterious word “ballet,” while Gaon suggested “something lonely, but it’s in the space,” which surprised the studio audience. While there is no date confirmed, both K-pop and Korean rock bands usually release one or two projects per year, a trend Xdinary Heroes has followed since 2022.

Until they return, fans are revisiting 2025’s “LXVE to Death.” Highlighted tracks include “ICU,” “FiRE (My Sweet Misery),” “Spoiler!!!” and “LOVE ME 2 DEATH.” For many, the band’s expanding catalog shows that K-pop’s global growth is not just about polished pop songs; it also includes distorted guitars, metal breakdowns and the steady rise of a rock band making its own path.
