After a long, dirty, and stressful election, Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump has been elected to be the 45th president of the United States. In a very close race, the American people have made their decision is elected what might history’s most controversial candidate. On the day prior to the election, Trump was behind his challenger, Hillary Clinton, in the polls. With a large turnout in voters, Trump managed to win just enough battleground states. Trump is the first Republican president since George W. Bush. However, Bush and his father, former President George H.W. Bush, did not endorse Trump throughout his campaign. Previous Republican presidential nominees, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Mitt Romney, also did not endorse Trump throughout his campaign. Trump’s victory comes as a disappointment to many politicians across the country. Aside from the Democrats, many people in his own party were very vocal in being against him, and some were even as willing to vote for his opponent. Trump has never been in public office. Nothing is certain on how he’ll be as a public servant. Trump has spent his career running his billion-dollar real estate company and being a reality TV star. Trump began his political activism after questioning the birthplace of President Obama. From there he built his campaign promoting radical immigration reform, protectionism, and isolationism. Trump has been an extremely polarizing candidate, and it is unsure how many Americans, who strongly opposed him, will react to these results. Many celebrities claimed that they would be moving out of the country. We can only speculate how Obama will hand over the Oval Office. For TAMIU students and the people of Laredo, the future of the city is uncertain. If Trump’s plan for large-scale deportations and a border wall are put into effect, Laredo will be exposed to a massive federal presence unlike any time in recent memory. As for the global community, they will have to simply wait for what Trump does with America.
