Pushing the Ph.D.

Dr. Ariadne Gonzalez received her Ph.D. over the summer while teaching courses for the Department of Psychology and Communication. Gonzalez first graduated from TAMIU with a Bachelor of Arts in communication.  She then received her master's, also in communication, from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Now, just this summer, she earned her Ph.D. in organizational communication from Texas A&M-College Station. (more…)

Whitewashing in American Cinema

Earlier this summer, controversy arose after the announcement that Matt Damon was cast as the lead in the upcoming epic, The Great Wall.  The current dilemma with whitewashing is on both sides concerning studio marketing and film authenticity. The casting of a well-known American actor over an unknown international actor  to secure funding is a common tactic; however, this marketing tool often undermines the film’s authenticity and historical accuracy. Accusations of whitewashing were almost immediate; Fresh Off The Boat star Constance Wu took to social media to vent her frustration with the casting choice. Wu stated that the film perpetuates the “white savior” narrative, all too common in the film industry. (more…)

TAMIU Expands Communication Course Offerings for Students

At the beginning of this new school year at TAMIU, there are several great things to look forward to.  From the myriad of new faces of potential friends all over campus, to reunions with college friends, the beginning of a semester is sure to bring something new for everyone.  This semester is especially exciting for returning Communications majors.  Starting this semester, TAMIU offers two new classes that are sure to prepare any student who desires to work in the ever-expanding world of multimedia. Campus Carry: What You Need To Know

TAMIU’s 2016 fall semester starts with enthusiasm and the new controversial Campus Carry Law.  Since it was accepted by the Texas A&M University System, some doubts have surfaced about whether the law will or will not be beneficial for institutions of higher education.  When considering these doubts, it is vital to understand the limits of the Campus Carry Law: it only “allows licensed holders to carry a concealed handgun on a campus of higher education.” (more…)
