The Greatest of All Time

On May 25, 1965, Sonny Liston enters a ring with his opponent seeking to regain his title. Liston has been getting himself in trouble since his first defeat by this opponent. He needed this rematch, not only to preserve his boxing career, but to redeem his honor. He’s been a broken man ever since. Liston comes at his opponent with a left jab, but it proves useless. His opponent swings over with a phantom punch, a strike not even the judges could see, and Liston goes down. He tries to get up, but he can’t. In less than two minutes, Liston is defeated again. What he failed to recognize was that he was not having a rematch with the same man. His first loss was by Cassius Clay. His second unapologetic loss was by Muhammad Ali. (more…)

Pride and Privilege

I was raised to dream of being the All-American girl: over-achieving, well-mannered, with a cute face to sweeten the deal. It seems that by mere accident I found a solution many years ago on a date I can’t even remember. (more…)

The celebration took place in different boroughs of New York City and involved several vessels and commands. Fleet Week is special event mainly hosted by the US Navy. However, alongside the Coast Guard, the Marine Corps and foreign navies are sometimes present. This year, the Canadian navy had one of their ships at port. Fleet Week is generally a public event where people could take tours inside the ships and meet some of the sailors. Aside from that, it is also a celebration for the sailors, who are given extended liberty to explore the city. (more…)

Lucky Thirteen: A Story of Surviving And Thriving

At twenty-one years old, Kenneth “Kenny” Duncan Jr. leads a rather ordinary life. A self-described cowboy, his wardrobe largely consists of boots and jeans. His playlist includes classics from George Strait and Kenny Chesney, which he blasts while driving on the streets of Laredo. When he’s not on campus working or studying, he can be found fishing at the lake or sharing poems at Gallery 201. This life, filled with simple pleasures and few worries, is something Duncan cherishes now more than ever.  Because just over a year ago, his life was forever changed by three words: “You have cancer.” (more…)
